Jim and Kathi Lengel of Waterbury, Vermont, own this beautiful 1940 Chris-Craft 30-foot Enclosed Cruiser Model 54 (Hull ID 29315) named Chee, which is moored in Blue Bill Cove, off Narragansett Bay in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
The Lengels are continuing her restoration, completing the fine work already accomplished by former owner Hank Walpole and boatwright Ted Bullock in South Carolina.
The antique cruiser was delivered from Algonac, Michigan, to Chattanooga, Tennessee, in late 1939, under the name Sarah-Anne. She lived on freshwater lakes and rivers for most of her life, moving to a tidewater creek on John’s Island in 2015, then up north in 2019.
Powered by a 95-hp Chris-Craft Model K engine, Chee is not a speedboat, rather the original picnic boat. She contains most of her original structure and equipment, except for a new roof, carburetor, alternator, and a few bottom planks. Even the head is original equipment. She’ll cruise all day at six knots (seven mph) and provides comfortable overnight accommodations in her V-berth and convertible settee.
